Gardasil HPV Vaccine Serious Side Effects

“It looks as if an unproven vaccine with dangerous side effects is being pushed as a miracle drug,” says Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, a public interest group responsible for investigating and prosecuting government corruption.

In 2006, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved Gardasil, the first vaccine developed to prevent cervical cancer, precancerous genital lesions and genital warts due to human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6, 11, 16 and 18. The vaccine was approved for use in females 9-26 years of age. Some states are debating whether to make the vaccine mandatory for schoolgirls. Some 16 states are considering mandatory-vaccination bills. One state, Virginia, has passed such a bill into law.

While drug maker Merk & Co has been campaigning to make the HPV vaccine mandatory for all young girls, documents show that serious side effects and deaths have been associated with the vaccine. Three deaths related to the vaccine were reported.

Of the 1,637 adverse-event reports, 136 have been deemed serious by the FDA, ranging from seizures to Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a rare life-threatening disorder in which the immune system attacks nerves and induces paralysis. Eighteen women who received the vaccine while pregnant experienced complications, ranging from miscarriages to fetal abnormalities, according to new FDA data. Merck has distributed more than five million doses of Gardasil in the U.S. since its introduction in June 2006. The vaccine is administered in three shots over a period of six months.

Analysts estimated that Merck could make $2- $4 billion off the sales of Gardasil. Over 2 million HPV vaccines have been administered across the U.S.
